HALI STOPPED AT HER VILLA LONG ENOUGH to change her clothes and then headed straight to the Salty Cauldron. She was ten minutes late opening, but it was a cloudy day. The humidity was oppressive enough she had no doubt storms were coming. That would have a direct impact on business, although she didn’t mind today. It allowed her to conduct some research.

She set up her iPad so she could run searches on the internet between drink orders, and then did a deep dive on mirror monsters. Unfortunately for her, the stories were so fantastical she had trouble figuring out which ones might be true. Most of them seemed like they had to be fake. That didn’t mean there wasn’t someone out there who had legitimately crossed paths with a mirror monster at some point. She was simply having trouble deciding who might be on the up and up.

“What are you looking at?” Kendra asked as she slid into the bar area to start prepping for the daytime drinkers.

“Hmm?” Hali lifted her eyes to her server and shrugged. “I’m thinking of writing a book.” It was the sort of lie that had slipped off her tongue more than once. She wasn’t uncomfortable uttering it. “I had a dream about a mirror monster last night, a dark shadow that could reach through the glass and pull people through it. Hali blinked several times and then shook her head. “I don’t know that you want to volunteer information like that. The fulfillment part I mean. People might talk.”

Kendra merely shrugged. “I’m fine with it. I like the mirror monster thing though. It’s like Candyman.”

Hali stilled. “Candyman?”

“You know that old horror movie they redid not too long ago. You say his name five times in a mirror—or, wait, is the mirror necessary? Now I can’t remember—and he appears out of thin air to kill you. He has a hook on his hand and bees crawling out of his mouth. It’s been a long time since I saw that movie, so I can’t remember.”

“I don’t think the mirror was necessary,” Hali replied. “I saw that movie too. My brother loves horror movies. On Halloween every year, he makes me watch three or four of the old ones with him. He says they’re better than the new ones.”

“Knowing your brother, I’m guessing he likes the old ones because they were as much about nudity as killing.”

“I can totally see that.” Hali went back to reading and allowed Kendra to handle the handful of customers who showed up. She was so lost in what
